Piano Tuition
READINESS
Generally, children are not ready for individual instrumental
instruction until the age of at least 6 or 7 years, and one
of the best instruments to begin with is the piano.
Playing the piano, students learn elements of percussion, rhythm,
melody, harmony, hearing high & very high, low & very
low, and about key signatures, the formation of chords, and
the co-ordination of fingers of both hands and a foot at the
same time!

When is my child ready for private
instrument instruction?
It has been found that children's progress on an instrument
is enhanced where they have attended preschool or pre-instrument
music enrichment classes, such as Kindermusik, as foundations
have been laid for musicianship through rhythmic activities,
singing, listening, movement and musical pre-notation skills.

PIANO LESSONS FOR BEGINNERS

ENCORE on KEYS - Junior Series: 5 to 7 years
A stimulating and enjoyable introduction to keyboard learning, featuring the
lovable "Onkie" characters. Although the focus
is on the development of keyboard and piano skills, the Encore
teaching approach is not a traditional one of "read and
play".
Emphasis is placed on experiencing music through listening and
then imitating through singing, verbalization and appropriate
movement.
Transferring this knowledge to the keyboard and developing reading
skills then become the final steps in the process.
Home materials: CD, music book, flash-cards,
wallet.
Individual Piano lessons: 1 child (parent
may observe)
Individual Piano lesson length: 30 minutes
Fees: $225/term of 9 lessons (ie $25/lesson)

Group Piano Class size: Maximum 3 children
Group Piano Class length: 45 minutes
Fees: $162/term of 9 lessons (ie $18/lesson)

LESSONS
Individual piano lessons for adults and children are 30 minutes
once a week for 9 weeks during the school term. Where illness
prevents attendance, every effort is made to find a time for
a catch up lesson.
VENUE
Piano lessons are held in Aberfoyle Park at the home of Geoff
& Kristen Driver, or for students of Sunrise Christian School
(Morphett Vale), at the school, during school hours as arranged.
PRACTISE
Initially I recommend beginning with a 5-10 minute practise time
twice a week. As the material increases in difficulty, and more work is
given, and depending on the interest and motivation of the child, we
may suggest a little more (eg. 15mins 3 or 4 times per week).
Usually the request comes the other way around, and parents
find that they need to limit the amount of time allowed for
piano playing.
EXAMINATIONS
At the beginner stage of piano playing (learning the basic
skills), examinations are not necessary. Later on in the learning
process, these may be of some value.
FEES
Tuition fees for individual piano lessons are $22 (30 minute lesson).
Fees are charged on a term basis (at the beginning of term),
unless otherwise arranged.
